Beginners: What to Expect and Tips For Success!
What to Expect
When lessons start, Twinklers (new violinists) are anxious to start playing and making sound BUT the initial focus is on learning correct posture (violin hold and bow hold) so that when they do start to play, the sound is good.
Remind your Twinkler (and yourself) that if you carefully master proper technique, you will be able to learn the pieces and progress faster!
Mastering good posture and learning the five Twinkle variations and theme is the first major milestone. There is no “normal” when it comes to how long this takes but think months not weeks.
Plan to practice 15–30 minutes a day for the first several months.
Tips for
Beginner Success
- Listen, listen, listen to the Suzuki CD! Especially the Twinkle Variations. An hour a day is fine 😉
- Consistent practicing is key!!! Five days per week minimum.
- Try to have a set time and place for practicing.
- Practice what the teacher has assigned and practice it correctly! Ask questions during lessons if you aren’t clear on what the assignment is. Don’t hesitate to call or during the week if you have more questions.
- Celebrate the small victories as they are learning to hold the violin!
- Come up with a reward system based on practicing and attitude rather than progress.
- Read Dr. Suzuki’s “Nurtured By Love” to help you understand the Suzuki Method.
- Keep practicing fun! Some days that is a lot harder than others, but things will go more smoothly if you keep a positive attitude!
