Materials
To begin lessons you will need the following items:
- Good quality violin and bow
- Beginners should expect to pay around $700 for a fair quality instrument. Higher-end student violins cost $1,000 and up. I don't require students to pay a certain amount for their violins, but keep in mind a violinist is only as good as their instrument. Get the best instrument you can afford.
- It is essential that you have the right size violin.
The best place to buy a violin is from a violin shop! They can help you pick out the best instrument for your child.
I recommend:
- Adam Day Violins 4914 S State Murray, UT 84107
801.518.6138
- Charles Liu Fine Violins 7450 S State. Midvale, UT 84047
801.255.9636
- Shoulder rest
- Younger children tend to prefer a shaped sponge shoulder rest.
- For older children I recommend a KUN shoulder rest.
- Be sure your shoulder rest is the same size as your violin
- You can buy these at the music stores linked above or online at Shar Music or Amazon
- Be sure to get the same size shoulder rest as your violin!
- For new beginners
- Suzuki Violin Book 1 and CD (available on Amazon or at most music stores)
