I frequently get asked, “What age is the best for my child to start learning to play the violin?”
My answer is:
- More than age it is “stage.”
- Are you in the stage of life where YOU (the parent) are able to commit to practicing with your child 20–30 minutes (for beginners) five days a week?
- Are YOU ready to attend weekly lessons with your child and arrange for child care for your other children (if applicable) so you can remain focused during lessons?
- Are YOU ready to have tons of enthusiasm and creativity to help your child stay motivated every day? Even on days when your child is being difficult and doesn't want to practice?
- Are YOU ready to spend money to provide your child with a good quality instrument (think $700+ for beginners)? Music books and accessories will also be needed. Find information on materials needed here.
- Are YOU familiar with who Dr. Suzuki was and what his method is all about? I highly recommend reading Nurtured by Love, by Dr. Suzuki. You may purchase the book here or borrow a copy from me. You can also read about Dr. Suzuki and the Suzuki Method on my website.
If after thinking about all of the above you feel ready...
